Classic Charm and Rainy Skies: Maureen & Bailey’s Canterbury Castle Wedding

Wedding Service Canterbury Castle Lake Orion MI

There is something incredibly special about a wedding day where everything just flows. When Maureen and Bailey first told us they were planning a summer wedding at Canterbury Castle in Lake Orion, we knew it was going to be a gorgeous day. Set on 21 beautiful, historic acres, this venue brings an old-world charm that instantly makes a wedding feel timeless.

But what we loved most wasn’t just the stunning architecture—it was the relaxed, joyful energy Maureen and Bailey brought to every single moment.

Why a Single-Venue Timeline is a Game Changer

Maureen and Bailey chose to host both their intimate ceremony and their evening reception entirely within Canterbury Village. As photographers, we cannot stress enough how much this elevates the whole wedding day experience.

Instead of rushing through cross-town traffic to get from a church to a reception hall, the timeline unfolded naturally. There was no logistical stress or frantic clock-watching. This gave the couple plenty of quiet moments to focus on each other and spend quality time with their immediate families, while allowing us to capture deep, unhurried candid moments.

Embracing the Elements (and the Lighting!)

If you’ve spent any time in Michigan during the summer, you know the weather loves to keep everyone guessing! True to form, the day brought everything from demanding, bright afternoon light to sudden seasonal downpours.

As a dual-photographer & video team, this is exactly where specialization matters. Instead of trying to be a massive corporate agency that handles everything under the sun, we focus entirely on our mastery of light and storytelling.

Because we operate with a nimble, mobile setup, we were able to pivot instantly when the rain started. We didn’t miss a single beat—or a single raw emotion. The result? A collection of images that seamlessly blends timeless family traditions with the real, unscripted magic of the day.

A Breathtaking Ceremony in the Canterbury Village Chapel

Once the morning preparations wrapped up, everyone gathered inside the stunning Canterbury Village Wedding Chapel. If you’ve never been inside, it is an absolute dream. It’s actually a historic 1890s barn that was meticulously converted into a chapel, complete with massive exposed wooden beams, incredible old-world craftsmanship, and gorgeous stained-glass windows.

The entire room fell completely silent the moment the doors opened and Maureen walked down the aisle. Their service was beautifully officiated by a close family friend, which made the whole ceremony feel deeply personal, intimate, and perfectly “them.”

Photographer’s Tip: Mastering Indoor Mood Lighting

From a photography standpoint, historic chapels are incredibly romantic, but their deep, dramatic wood tones and moody lighting can be tricky to shoot. Many venues like this can easily look too dark or lose their warmth in photos.

To handle this, we carefully balanced the soft, natural shadows of the room with just a touch of subtle, professional lighting. This allowed us to keep that cozy, romantic ambiance exactly as you see it with the human eye, while ensuring the true colors of Maureen’s stunning bridal gown and the couple’s heartfelt expressions shined through perfectly.

Efficiency Meets Elegance: Stress-Free Family Portraits

Right after the ceremony, we cleared the chapel for family photos. Anyone who has ever been in a wedding knows that family formals can easily turn into a game of herding cats. But thanks to some incredible prep work by both the mothers of the bride and groom, everyone knew exactly where to be. We cruised through the shot list in record time, leaving plenty of room for everyone to relax before the reception.

From there, we headed outside to explore the sprawling, historic grounds for portraits. It was a classic, humid Michigan summer afternoon, and we even had a few random rain showers roll through Oakland County.

Photographer’s Tip: Why Overcast Skies Are Your Friend

Many couples panic when they see clouds on their wedding day, but as photographers, we secretly love them! Overcast skies act like a giant, natural softbox, giving us beautifully even, shadowless light.

To keep the images from looking flat against the vibrant green estate, we set up a few of our off-camera flashes. This added a crisp, bright pop to Maureen and Bailey, keeping their portraits looking vibrant, clean, and full of life despite the cloudy weather.

Whimsical Carousel Moments & A Grand Castle Reception

One of our absolute favorite moments of the day was taking the couple over to the estate’s historic on-site carousel. Capturing Maureen and Bailey in their elegant, formal attire against the colorful, whimsical backdrop of the carousel was pure magic. It brought out a playful, joyful energy that resulted in some of the best unscripted, candid frames of the entire day.

Once the portrait session wrapped up, it was time to party! We moved into the grand castle ballroom, where the room instantly came alive. The energy skyrocketed the second the couple was introduced by Jen from SuperFunk DJ Company. Jen is one of our favorite preferred vendors to work with, and she did a phenomenal job getting everyone on their feet and setting the perfect tone for an unforgettable night.

Lighting Up the Castle Ballroom

The grand castle ballroom features magnificent, heavy chandeliers that wrap the room in a rich, warm ambiance. While those fixtures look incredibly romantic in person, their deep orange glow can make skin tones and white bridal gowns look a bit distorted in photos.

To overcome this, we set up a few strategic, hidden lights in the corners of the ballroom. This gave us a crisp, clean glow on the couple and guests, allowing us to keep that cozy ballroom vibe intact while ensuring everyone’s skin tones looked flawless. The gorgeous dark green decor stayed rich and true to life as everyone enjoyed an exceptional dinner prepared by the venue’s amazing staff.

High-Energy Dancing & Epic Late-Night Portraits

Once dinner wrapped up, the party officially started. The dance floor stayed completely packed for hours, filled with endless high-energy moments and packed crowds.

Later in the evening, we snuck away with Maureen and Bailey for a few quiet minutes to take some dramatic, late-night portraits on the dark village grounds. Just as we set up our gear, a massive bank of storm clouds rolled in overhead.

We placed a single light right behind the couple to create a striking backlit effect. The lighting perfectly sculpted a crisp, luminous outline around Maureen’s beautiful full-sleeved embroidered dress and Bailey’s tuxedo, carving them right out of the deep midnight background. It was the absolute perfect, cinematic way to wrap up an unforgettable day—and we finished the shot just seconds before the sky opened up into a heavy summer downpour!

Real-World Advice for Celebrations at Canterbury Village

Counter Deep Mood Lighting in Converted Chapels:

The historic wood-timber architecture of the Canterbury Village Wedding Chapel is stunning but naturally absorbs light. Ensure your photography team deploys off-axis supplemental flash during formal portraits to maintain clean color separation and prevent your bridal details from falling into shadow.

Master the Warm Temperature of Castle Ballrooms:

The grand chandeliers inside Canterbury Castle emit a strong orange cast. To achieve true color balance, your photographer must set exposure parameters manually and use crisp, off-camera remote strobes to keep the deep greens and whites of your decor vibrant and true to life.

The Power of Specialization Over Corporate Bundling

When coordinating your creative team, prioritize independent, specialized businesses that collaborate seamlessly through preferred vendor networks. Choosing dedicated experts who master their individual fields—rather than massive, all-in-one corporate bundles—guarantees superior technical quality, specialized attention, and exclusive cross-discounts that protect your wedding investment.
