B.N.’s Family Photos at home in Bloomfield Hills MI

I remember when the Bahadur family called us to inquire about capturing family photos. They came to us as a highly recommended referral from Cafe Cortina in Farmington Hills, where they were planning to celebrate a landmark 80th birthday party.

Before heading out to their big celebration dinner, the family wanted to gather at their home in Bloomfield, Michigan, to capture all three children, their spouses, and grandchildren together. It sounded like a wonderful afternoon project, and I jumped at the chance.

While our studio specializes mostly in wedding photography, a huge part of our work involves creating beautiful family portraits. Focusing entirely on a family portrait session at home felt like a fun and rewarding adventure.

We met up at the house to find a backdrop with the perfect aesthetic that wouldn’t require moving heavy furniture around. The living room fireplace ended up being the most central and logical spot. Had the Michigan weather been a bit more cooperative instead of snowing, we definitely would have stepped outdoors for a few frames as well!

We arrived early to get acquainted with everyone while the family was milling about and getting the kids ready. Once everyone was set, we organized our groupings and started shooting.

One of the technical challenges of photographing against a light indoor wall is minimizing harsh backgrounds shadows. While a flash will always cast a minor shadow, we utilized off-camera lighting techniques to soften the contrast so it doesn’t distract the eye. The final images have a beautifully balanced, clean look.

We spent about half an hour capturing all the different family combinations before wrapping up. Right as we were heading out the door, they asked for one last special photo. As part of the milestone birthday celebration, each of the children was gifted a beautiful watch. We captured a wonderful, close-up memory of the entire timepieces collection together.
