A Chic, Intimate Celebration: Kathy and Matt’s Vinology Ann Arbor Wedding
I have been looking forward to capturing a Vinology Ann Arbor wedding for a long time, especially since the bride is my dear friend and industry expert, Kathy Bishop. Kathy has spent years as a wedding planner perfecting events for others, so it was a joy to see her finally step into the spotlight. She and Matt chose a beautifully intimate micro-wedding, surrounded only by their immediate family, children, and a few of their closest friends.
We began the morning with a relaxed “getting ready” session at their home before heading to the iconic University of Michigan Law Quad for portraits. As a photographer, I always consider the story told by the backdrop, and the Law Quad’s Gothic-style stone archways and 1920s craftsmanship provide a timeless, architecturally significant setting that is impossible to replicate. We spent about 45 minutes exploring the sun-dappled cobblestones, capturing the couple’s connection against some of the most beautiful backdrops on campus before heading downtown.
The Magic of the Bubble Room
Located right on Main Street, Vinology isn’t just a restaurant; it’s an experience tailored for couples who value world-class hospitality and a chic, underground aesthetic. The heartbeat of Kathy and Matt’s celebration was the downstairs event space, famously known as the Bubble Room.
As a photographer, I am obsessed with the lighting in this room. It features over 400 hand-blown glass bubbles suspended from the ceiling, creating a soft, ethereal glow that looks incredible in photos. The exposed brick walls and mahogany bar add a layer of warmth and texture, making the space feel “warm and cozy” yet undeniably high-end. For Kathy and Matt’s day, it provided the perfect intimate backdrop for their 15-minute ceremony, conducted by a close friend of the bride.
Tailored for Micro-Weddings
What makes a Vinology Ann Arbor wedding stand out for smaller groups is the flexibility of the space. Whether you are hosting 20 guests in the glass-enclosed Cellar Room or a slightly larger group of 50 in the Bubble Room, the venue never feels “too big” or empty.
Following the ceremony, the evening transitioned seamlessly into an intimate dinner. One of the most touching moments followed shortly after during their first dance, when one of their daughters stepped in to join them—a beautiful reminder of what these small weddings are really about. Between the expertly paired wines and the attentive staff, every detail felt curated and deeply personal.
As the sun set, we ducked outside for a few signature night shots in front of the restaurant’s glowing storefront before wrapping up the night. I had a great time with Kathy and Matt and wish them the very best!
