Leah & Bruno’s Wedding at St. Nicholas Greek Othodox Troy & Cafe Cortina Farmington Hills MI

Polished European Garden Charm at Cafe Cortina in Southeast Michigan

Some wedding days unfold with a natural, unhurried rhythm that makes capturing the love story a complete joy. For this incredible couple, their celebration was defined by an entirely relaxed, at-ease mood that allowed their genuine connection to shine through every single frame. Their vision leaned beautifully into an aesthetic of timeless, romantic elegance—combining deep ancestral traditions with a warm, intimate, outdoor garden party. Moving seamlessly from a gorgeous, sun-drenched ceremony in Troy to the lush, historic landscapes of Farmington Hills, the entire afternoon felt completely effortless and beautifully grounded.

The overall style of the day was sophisticated yet unpretentious, curated to let the natural beauty of each local geographic anchor speak for itself. Rather than forcing over-staged poses or chasing fleeting trends, the couple chose classic, smart tailoring that allowed them to move comfortably from walking along sunlit nature trails to dancing on a brick patio beneath the stars. The bridal party looked impeccably sharp but felt entirely at ease, creating an environment where authentic, candid moments happened organically.

The Timeline

The sacred marriage ceremony took place at the historic St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Troy, Michigan. It was a magnificent afternoon. As the couple stood before the altar to take part in the ancient ritual of the crowning, the sun poured directly through the windows circling the massive upper dome of the sanctuary. This architecture created a dramatic, ethereal shaft of illumination that perfectly highlighted the candle smoke and the couple’s quiet smiles. To capture this vast space and freeze the interplay of ambient light against the deep wood ceilings, I deployed my versatile 24-70mm f/2.8 lens to document the intricate details of the Orthodox liturgy.

Following the family portraits, we boarded the limo bus and headed over to the expansive Heritage Park in Farmington Hills, Michigan, for our dedicated creative portrait session. Spanning over 211 acres of pristine nature preserves, this park is an absolute playground for high-end wedding photography. We had beautiful, soft natural light filtering through the mature tree canopies. Utilizing my 85mm f/1.8 lens, I was able to sculpt a creatively shallow depth of field, rendering the historic Spicer House and the lush foliage into a creamy, painterly background while completely isolating the couple. The couple’s relaxed demeanor made it effortless to capture authentic, unforced candids as they strolled down the quiet gravel pathways.

Our final stop was the legendary Cafe Cortina in Farmington Hills for an intimate, upscale evening reception. Guests were treated to an extraordinary, seasonally influenced meal featuring handmade pasta and estate-grown herbs crafted by this iconic local trattoria.

As night fell, the celebration shifted completely outdoors. The couple shared their romantic first dance outside on the tree-covered brick patio beneath rows of twinkling bistro lights. To combat the heavy night drop and beautifully sculpt the couple against the dark skies without washing out the romantic glow of the venue, I transitioned to a hybrid lighting combination. I positioned an off-camera flash unit on a remote stand to slice a sharp, dimensional rim light behind them, capturing a spectacular final series of dramatic sunset shots as they danced the night away.

A Legacy of Local Hospitality

Celebrating a wedding at Café Cortina allows couples to step directly into a historic milestone of Metro Detroit’s culinary landscape. Founded in 1976 by Adriano and Rina Tonon on the direct site of a former apple orchard, this European-inspired hidden oasis recently celebrated its golden 50-year anniversary of heritage hospitality. Long before the modern “farm-to-table” movement became a commercial wedding trend, the Tonon family was pioneering the philosophy by cultivating an on-premise garden that supplies over 70 percent of their summer produce and heirloom tomatoes.

The venue’s architecture reflects a classic, rustic Italian countryside estate, featuring indoor stone fireplaces and an enchanting tree-covered courtyard that offers complete seclusion. Integrating this level of historic culinary excellence into your timeline guarantees guests an unforgettable, upscale dining experience.

Position off-camera flash to sculpt dimensional rim light during romantic outdoor night first dances.
  • Embrace the Dome Lighting: When marrying at St. Nicholas, time your ceremony around mid-afternoon. The changing angles of the sun piercing the upper dome create natural spotlighting effects that look spectacular on camera.
  • Utilize the Spicer House Backdrop: While Heritage Park has 4.5 miles of nature trails, the historic stone and wood facades of the Spicer House provide a stunning architectural anchor for timeless bridal portraits.
  • Master the Patio Flash Rules: Cafe Cortina’s patio is deeply romantic, but the zero-reflectivity of an open night sky means on-camera flash will look flat. Future couples should ensure their photographer utilizes strategic off-camera flash units to sculpt dimensional light against the greenery.
