I absolutely loved this couple’s wedding at Waldenwoods Wedding Venue! From the moment we met for their engagement session, I was captivated by how kind and genuine Christina and Jeff are. I knew from the start their summer wedding day would be something special.

Lakeside Getting Ready & The First Look

We began the afternoon at Waldenwoods Wedding & Event Venue in Howell, MI, capturing the final preparations a few hours before the ceremony. The goal was to utilize the historic charm of the venue for getting-ready shots before transitioning to their “first reveal” on the patio overlooking the lake.

Everything went seamlessly. You can often tell how close a couple is by the energy of the people surrounding them; this was a group that truly cherished Christina and Jeff. When the moment arrived, everyone gathered below the balcony to watch Jeff see his beautiful bride for the first time. It was a touching, unforgettable moment—the kind that makes me love looking back at these images even more than I loved capturing them.

The Strategy Behind the Summer Schedule

We checked off most of the formal portraits around the lush, green grounds before the service. For a single-location summer wedding like this, I always recommend a first look. It allows the couple to enjoy their cocktail hour and lawn games with friends without the rush of being dragged away for photos. It keeps the day relaxed for the guests and ensures we have plenty of time for those “really pretty” images without any time pressure.

A Picturesque Ceremony on Lake Walden

The service was held right on the shores of Lake Walden. With a gorgeous summer sky and a light breeze coming off the water to keep everyone comfortable, the setting was picturesque perfection. Photographing toward the water in the late afternoon can be a technical challenge due to the harsh light, so we utilized professional auxiliary lighting to fill in shadows and balance the exposure. Not every photographer takes this extra step, but you can certainly see the difference it makes in the crisp, high-end quality of the photos.

The Iconic Waldenwoods Balcony Tradition

The ceremony, performed by a close family friend and pastor, was followed by a long-standing Waldenwoods tradition: the group balcony shot! The venue staff is incredible at facilitating this, gathering the entire guest list for a massive, celebratory photo. It’s a pre-planned highlight that our couples always seem to love—and it looks incredible in a summer gallery.

Dancing in Cromaine Hall & Golden Hour Magic

The reception kicked off with heartfelt toasts and a moving prayer from the Father of the Bride. When Christina and Jeff took to the floor for their first dance, the room was electric. To capture the magic, we used a specialized lighting technique that gives the dance floor images a stunning, three-dimensional feel. As the sun began to dip, we escaped to the lake one last time. The summer sunset was incredible, providing a dreamy glow through the trees for the perfect finale to a perfect day.
